"Many things that among the Greeks are considered improper and unfitting," wrote Cornelius Nepos in the preface to his "Lives," "are permitted by our customs. Is there by chance a Roman who is ashamed to take his wife to a dinner away from home? Does it happen that the mistress of the house in any family does not enter the anterooms frequented by strangers and show herself among them? Not so in Greece there the woman accepts invitations only among families to which she is related, and she remains withdrawn in that inner part of the house which is called the gynaeceum, where only the nearest relatives are admitted."

Though the author's arch-conservatism is evident almost from the very first line, his take on the first imperial family of Rome is refreshing in that he refuses to take Tacitus' and Suetonius' most salacious and ridiculous accusations against the House of Caesar at face-value. He attempts to discover the truth behind some of the most puzzling incidents related by the ancient historians.
Why was Caligula insistent that his sisters be honored alongside with himself? Why did Agrippina the Younger consent to marrying her uncle? Why did Livilla starve herself to death?

Ferrero looks at these questions and more from the angle of what the beginning of the Principate must have been like for the female members of the great family and the unique pressures on them.

The Women of the Caesars Guglielmo Ferrero 9781530946532 Books Reviews

Originally published in 1873, this is an "Okay" short biography of the wives of the first Roman emperors. It is a short book and is therefore pretty short on detail. I have read a couple of other books about Livia Augusta and the content of this book agrees with the content of the other books I have read. My problem is not the accuracy or inaccuracy of the content, but the author spends a fair amount of time providing the reader with his own opinion about things (including how superior we are in this day and age to have Christianity and its superior moral values in Western Civilization). This is something I have encountered in other biographies of the late 19th and early 20th century and I find that this makes these books virtually unreadable. I do not feel that it is the place of the biographer to compare the merits of his subject's culture and religious beliefs to his own except to point out differences and how they were or were not regarded as normal at the time. If the biographer feels that his culture and religion are superior, so be it, but I do not want to read about his personal judgements on another culture and religion.
