My Life on the Plains with Illustrations eBook General George Armstrong Custer

I love the story, the first hand accounts written by Genl G. Armstrong Custer. But, I hate this edition.
This Lakeside Classic edition, the special guest commentator M M Quaife, has such an agenda going on.
What they have done in this book, he and the editor, have taken it upon themselves to edit Custer.
If Custer goes on too long with letters and official notices, inter office information from General to General,
they have left it out, omitted it as if it never happened. If they feel something is not pertinent to the story
they leave it out.
Right now I am in a place where Custer was court marshalled. Custer didn't stop writing, he kept writing for the
Galaxy Magazine, but these " editors " have decided what Custer was writing about wasn't relevant, so they left it out.
This My Life on the Plains is Custer ! It is history, it is his writing as he wrote it.
But these know it all editors have taken it upon themselves to edit Custer.
This isn't the real book at all. You get pieces of Custer.

I went and bought the real deal, an 1874 hardcover, because I couldn't stand what they have done to his book.

My Life on the Plains with Illustrations eBook General George Armstrong Custer Reviews

It's a special treat to hear about the Plains Indian wars directly from General George Armstrong Custer as he lived it. I've read other books by researchers but they provide the information slanted to reflect their take on history. The General was well aware that there were differing opinions on the westward expansion. The truth is that the Indians had a very different culture from the White man. What was normal for the Indians was considered an atrocity to the White man. Raiding, stealing, and tribal warfare was almost a sport among the tribes and how young warriors proved themselves by counting coup (ponies stolen, killings, and scalps taken). Indians brutalized themselves in hopes of stressing their bodies so much they would receive a vision. Custer admired their stamina, cunning and bravery but his job was to keep them from terrorizing the settlers and way-stations on the routes to the west. He was an adrenaline junkie with a highly developed sense of duty.
What were you doing at age 28? Custer was writing a book which became a best-seller. This is history told first-hand, and if I were to make a comparison I would say that it was like Julius Caesar's "The Gallic Wars". He was a fearless soldier who had his horse shot out from underneath him a known eleven times during the Civil War, and in the end he was the youngest general this country has ever had at age 23. He was a man who was destined to die young. He probably knew this, and this could be the reason he decided to put it all down in a book. Hollywood raided his first hand account countless times. You will undoubtedly recognize scenes and incidents in movies that were stolen right out of Custer's book. I first became aware of him when I did a film at the Bighorn River in Montana called Little Big Man. I had a good part and worked on the film for six months. I had ample time to study the Custer legend and his men. At The Last Stand he was outnumbered twenty to one, and still put up one hell of a fight. There was only one, and there will never be another. I fully admit that after reading "the son of the morning star's" book I am a fan. (That was what the Sioux called him)
Great book on the early Western Plains. If you like this book you will also want to read the following similar 99 cent books

1. Baughman, the Oklahoma Scout Personal Reminiscences (1886)
2. Adventures Among the Indians; Or, Scouting with Gen. Custer (1884)

4. Reminiscences of Indian Scouting (1889)
5. The Plains of the Great West and Their Inhabitants (1876)
